Tapani Raiko, born in 1977, is the leader of the Deep Learning and Bayesian Modelling research group in Aalto University School of Science, affiliated with the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Computational Inference Research. He holds a tenure track position, an academy research fellow position, and is a co-founder of The Curious AI Company. He has received research grants of 0.9M euro and the company has received 0.8M euro investments. He teaches Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning in Aalto University. Raiko received his MSc in 2001 in Engineering Physics and Mathematics and his DSc in 2006 in Computer Science at Helsinki University of Technology. His research interests include fundamentals of deep learning, and new algorithms and methods in machine learning in general. He has published over 60 technical articles and book chapters on these topics, receiving more than a 1000 citations. Raiko's robotic grasping solution is used in the ZenRobotics recycler, an autonomous robotic recycling system for construction and demolition waste. A number of his deep learning methods have been adopted and further developed by Google DeepMind and Facebook, one also being used by the China Sports Lottery to improve the Chinese welfare system. The MIT press book Deep Learning (2016) mentions five of his works. Raiko has been the president of the Finnish AI Society and the editor in four books and journal issues.
