In his book Conceptual Spaces, Gärdenfors offers a theory of conceptual representations as a bridge between the symbolic and connectionist approaches. A conceptual space is built up from geometrical structures based on a number of quality dimensions. Gärdenfors shows how conceptual spaces can serve as an explanatory framework in a number of areas, in particular those concerning concept formation, induction, and semantics. His theory is relevant within several disciplines including cognitive science, theoretical philosophy, cognitive linguistics, computational linguistics and computer science.

The event is organized by the laboratory of computer and information science, Helsinki University of Technology, seminar on Statistical and Adaptive Approaches to Conceptual Modeling.
