Organization of the thesis

In chapter 2, publishing news-like information on the electronic media is discussed, with views on some of the currently available tools and methods.

Chapter 3 discusses pagination and how to automate it. The principles of traditional manual pagination are described, and the aspects that an automated pagination system should take into account and tasks that should be performed are discussed in detail.

Chapter 4 puts the pagination problem within a larger theoretical context, and works as an introduction for the methods used in case studies of chapter 5.

Chapter 5 presents three case studies on tentative implementations attacking the problem of automatic pagination of a newspaper delivered on fax. One of the implementations utilizes heuristic graph search, while the two others are differing implementations of simulated annealing. These implementations are not full-fledged newspaper fax production systems but studies of the automatic pagination, aimed at illuminating the usability of each method in context of the given problem.

Chapter 6 presents the conclusions that were drawn from the whole work and especially the case studies. Some future directions are suggested both for implementation of simulated annealing in general as well as for the automatic pagination of a newspaper delivered on fax and other electronic publications.
