Visualization and exploratory analysis are crucial in analysis of new data. You will develop machine learning methods for dimensionality reduction, visualization, and exploratory data analysis with multiple data sources, through probabilistic modeling of dependencies between data sets.
Research Site
The position is at the Department of Information and Computer Science, Aalto University, in the Statistical Machine Learning and Bioinformatics research group. The department was ranked among the top two departments of Aalto University in the Research Assessment Exercise 2009. The research group is part of Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT, and a member of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Computational Inference Research (COIN). The work will be instructed by academy research fellow Jaakko Peltonen (http://users.ics.aalto.fi/jtpelto/).

Desired Qualities of the Applicant
A successful applicant must be near to finishing master's studies in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, physics, or a related field. The aim is to complete the master's thesis during the employment period. The following are desired qualities/advantages:- Strong study record; an initial track record in research is an advantage
- Mathematical background, interest in probabilistic modeling and/or machine learning
- Interest in some of: exploratory data analysis, dimensionality reduction, manifold learning, visualization, and multi-task learning. Experience in these is an advantage.
- Good programming skills e.g. in C/C++/Matlab/R/Python and good communication skills
Contract Details
The salary will be based on the Aalto salary system (up to 2175 euro/month before tax for a M.Sc. worker). The contract will be for 6 months.
